Women’s March and Rally for Stalking Awareness Month

Advocacy for Humankind joined the Women’s March in San Francisco, on January 18, 2020, for National Stalking Awareness Month to help raise awareness of the coordinated stalking crimes epidemic.

The March kicked off at the Civic Center Plaza, directly across from the stunning San Francisco City Hall. Among the impressive line-up of speakers were San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Lieutenant Governor of California Eleni Kounalakis, and many inspirational female leaders, advocates, artists, and philanthropists. The spectators were later treated to a performance by the remarkably talented cast of Hamilton, the musical!

The Women’s March Mission Statement:

“The mission of the Women’s March movement is to unify and empower everyone who stands for human rights, civil liberties, and social justice for all. We stand together in solidarity for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families — recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.”

“We support the advocacy and movements that reflect our multiple and intersecting identities. We call on all defenders of human rights to join us. This march is the first step towards unifying our communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all.”

The March commenced after the rally wherein an estimated 12,000 people marched down Market Street, according to the Women’s March organizers. Advocacy for Humankind marched alongside the incredible crowd while holding signs and passing out brochures about coordinated stalking to inform and educate those unfamiliar with this crime.

According to a 2009 report by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, titled Stalking Victimization in the United States, more than 3 million victims have reported stalking in the United States, 448,557 of whom reported stalking by 3 or more people and 205,446 were being stalked electronically (including hacking of devices and use of smartphones).

Advocacy for Humankind is currently working with a number of state and government agencies as well as politicians to bring about new legislation in order to encourage investigation and prosecution.
